This .77 caliber smoothbore Doglock Trade Musket is offered in used condition with a bright bore that has been well maintained. The Doglock gets its name from the dog leg shaped catch, an additional safety feature, found on early flint locks. English doglocks became common around 1680 to 1700 and were made as late as 1715. Doglock muskets were obsolete after introduction of the Brown Bess musket, and they were imported into Canada and the American colonies, for trade during the 1720 to 1750 period. Many of these locks have been found in archaeological sites in America. This musket has a 14″ trigger reach and weighs 10.1 pounds.Polished bright, the .77 caliber smoothbore is 46″ long. The barrel is tapered from the breech to the muzzle. The octagon-to-round barrel turns to a round barrel with a single wedding band. The barrel exterior shows a few light marks that were not fully polished during the build. A tall brass blade front sight is soldered 2-1/2″ behind the muzzle. No rear sight is fitted on this early style musket. The walnut stock is finished to a medium brown and has a few small handling marks from use. The brass furniture has aged to a mellow patina. The top view shows the rounded comb of the brass buttplate that wraps over the top of the stock and is decorated with cast-in engraving. A brass thumb inlay with cast-in grotesque mask is found on the top of the wrist. A single bolt passes through the flared tang of the breech plug and engages the trigger plate below. The bottom view shows the wide flat buttplate with rounded toe and early style iron triggerguard with simple pointed finials. Three screws retain the rear of the triggerguard and the front is pinned. A sling swivel passes through the front of the triggerguard bow. A matching swivel passes through the forearm and rests on the middle ramrod pipe. No sling is included. A long wooden ramrod passes through three ringed iron ramrod pipes and matching entry pipe with long pointed skirt. The ramrod is fitted with a flared brass loading tip, but no threaded provisions are provided to accept cleaning and loading accessories. We recommend our RAMROD-C-44-10 with extension RAMROD-C-X4-10 to service this musket. Two bolts pass through the iron sideplate to retain the lock on the opposite side. Hand assembled from Rifle Shoppe Parts, this doglock has a heavy mainspring and crisp action. The doglock received its name because of the manually operated dog shaped cock catch, or thumb lever, which locks the cock at the half-cock notch. When the cock is pulled to the full-cock position it drops clear. Highly polished bright steel, the flat faced lock’s pan does not have a bridle to support the frizzen, a common feature of early English locks. The center of the plate is stamped with a small N in a box. We recommend our FLINT-AMBER-8 musket flints. A stainless steel vent liner is well positioned on the side of the barrel. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today’s best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash. The trigger has a heavy pull, in true military fashion. In very good condition, with a few handling marks and a bright clean bore, this musket is ready for your next reenactment.
