The .25 Auto isn’t known for its aggressive ballistic performance. In fact, it’s kind of known for being quite anemic in ballistics delivery. That said, it has served a very important role in the firearms world, especially in American shooting history. It has always been touted as an effective backup firearm cartridge and though the ballistics are often below that of the middle ground .22LR cartridges performance levels, this centerfire cartridge has some very unique benefits.
It is an exceptional cartridge for backup carry use due to the low muzzle flash, lower recoil and heavier projectile weight. It can be fired with less damage to hearing in a situation where you would need to use it without hearing protection (note: this is not an endorsement to fire any weapon without proper hearing protection or other safety instruments – always ensure you are following safety best practices while shooting). The round offers easy control and easy reloading into magazine due to its tactile size differences to smaller rounds. It is easy to identify, and the ballistics are much better than not having a backup. The types of firearms that can fire the round and which are purpose built for it, are generally being made to a higher standard now than in the past, and can be effective threat stoppers, especially when being deployed as a back up firearm.
