This 500 SW round is special both in its design relative to the rest of the “Fusion” line by Federal, and in the fact that the “Fusion” line was created specifically for deer hunting. At a whopping 325 grains, the skived projectile is a molecularly bonded lead core projectile that has an electrochemically pated copper jacket for the purpose of projectile weight retention upon impact.
This is a 325 grain specialty projectile that is made for bone crushing and penetration on hard to kill animals with tough hides and muscular builds. The lead core is almost fully covered by a copper jacket but is left open to facilitate some deformation and helping to keep the retention high. This round makes sense for the biggest, toughest animals from a hide/body makeup and from a size perspective. The .500 S&W is capable of killing anything in North America given the right conditions. Generally this is not a long range round that makes sense for flat, open shooting and instead, it thrives where you need more power and where harder, denser terrain conditions exist.
As a bush gun choice, this is an excellent deer hunting cartridge. The lower velocity and heavy hitting performance means that most deer are dead where they stand without overkill. The heavy bullet weight and sufficient power out of the barrel gives you an added bonus in heavy, dense forest or where there are thickets of heavy branches and deep woods. 1450 fps velocity and 1517 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle.
