This is a popular European loading of what Americans are more familiar with as the “.22 Savage High Power” round. This is an excellent round for use on small game where you need great stopping power, excellent velocity and a tame recoil profile. This is a popular round for smaller game but in its early years it was paraded around as a round capable of killing tigers in China. It was also famously used on safari in the untamed areas of India around its inception in the early teens (1912 or so). The potent round is still widely used to kill moderately sized deer in Eurasia and other areas. It is largely obsolete in the United States, but there are some special guns chambered in this round and it offers a bit of nostalgia and challenge in certain hunting scenarios.
The velocity of this round is a speedy 2861 feet per second, despite the nearly non-existent recoil. The case is a brass makeup with a Boxer primer which offers a very good way to put your hands on some brass, given the compelling price point for avid shooters of the round. The Sellier & Bellot name has been synonymous with quality since their emergence onto the munitions market in 1825. They’ve obviously been doing something right, as it affords them the opportunity to load “obsolete” cartridges and thereby serve large subsets of the shooting public who want the older stuff, without incurring too much risk.
